Hourglass Café was the first song that Pierre Catherine-Buffet and I wrote together - mere weeks earlier we had spoken for the first time only 3 days after he had moved to London from Montpellier and we spent the first few weeks just jamming, playing the odd cover song - Pierre's love of The Doors was quickly noted - and talking about a variety of music ranging from the similarity of Dancing Queen by Abba to nigh on every pop song to debating which cover of Alabama Song (either David Bowie or The Doors) was the best - and it is David's to be very clear ; ) A friendship quickly bloomed and upon that base, Hourglass Café was written.
As the lyricist, I can only begin to fathom the meaning of this song. It's a song of longing and want where the speaker has an addictive connection with the listener. The desperate speaker begs the listener to save them from despair whilst also damning them for playing games and letting them move through life without a rudder. It seems to me that what they want and what they need have become entwined and knotted, a bewildering spaghetti of incertitude.
The choruses seem to depict a dreamlike sequence of events in which the speaker imagines a world in which they are - or perhaps just can be - saved from the confusing and certainly uncertain situation described in the verses. I often find in my own life that my dreams and imaginations seem to make a lot more sense than reality ever has.
I have my own theories as to what the song also could mean but I think it may be better to leave any explanation I can provide here for fear of lying as it has been quite a while since I wrote this track and anyhow "Time left us all astray"...
Hourglass Café
VERSE 1
Time has left us all astray
Forgotten on the path
The tillerman demands his pay
And I have grown tired of your games
Forever walking on
With blind leading the sane
CHORUS 1
And all the lights went down
And the clouds flew far away
I saw you standing there
And I knew just what to say
You were a looking-glass
I was an hourglass and late
The sun was burning brown
In the Hourglass Café
VERSE 2
Weight has buried us below
Shoeless feet are sinking
Into a gently shifting glow
State hibernation comes today
Forgotten and unwanted
You've got no hand to play
CHORUS 2
Pretend that you're an angel
And I'm a sailor washed away
Stop me from sinking now
Or pull me under to decay
Into your open arms
I'll go with you either way
Into the depths of love
Or to the endless skies of grey
BRIDGE
Never say I didn't want to see your shine again
Never think that I wanted to deny a friend
But now I know that this is the end
Your love was only ever mine to lend
CHORUS 3
So all the lights went down
And the clouds flew far away
I saw you standing there
And I knew just what to say
You were a looking-glass
I was an hourglass and late
The sun was burning brown
In the turn-around cafe
