Pierre came to me one day with an almost complete composition for an upcoming brass recording he had booked in the studio and I thought it sounded great - it certainly had great potential - and I would have left it that way had Pierre not asked if I could sing over it in some way. I was of course very flattered but knew immediately that writing any kind of typically structured song would be impossible over a minute and half and as such i knew I would have to be inventive.
i also, coincidentally, was going somewhat through a phase of listening to Pet Shop Boys, Kae Tempest, and other softer rappers like Loyle Carner and Arlo Parks and as such I had been fancying writing a song in the spoken word. I also thought it would help me not to clash constantly with Pierre's huge brass band I knew would be in the background - or maybe the forefront? I would like to say my vocals accompany the brass rather than the other way round because, obviously, this song would not have been possible without his original composition (which we then changed slightly to account for my lyrics and also to allow his brass players the opportunity to breath oxygen occasionally!).
From that then I'm sure you have worked out that yes, the King is a metaphor for Pierre, yes he is too shy to admit he's an incredible musician and composer, and yes I am often in awe when I deal with him - I choose the word "deal" because he is so talented I often struggle to keep up but it always releases well in the end - just like with our King. King Pierre the great!

All Hail The King
All of this was made possible by one special guy
With a grin on his face
And a glint in his eye
Nothing could be possible without him
So All Hail the King
The court was loud and their voices still louder
But the fate of it all in the hands of the founder
No one did better no one was sounder
Nothing could happen without him
So All Hail the King
The hands of the King turned the keys white and black
Learned over an age but he felt so young
With a nod of the head came defence and attack
Rhythm and blues with a slip of the tongue
And so with a wave of his hands and a look of understanding
The court moved in unison with their chieftain commanding
The ills of the realm remedied sans demanding
It all happened because of him
So All Hail the King
