Fox Crossing The Road was a really fun and simple song to write for me - it's a straight forward blues jam as old as modern music itself. If it wasn't for the fortunate timing of Pierre's upcoming recording session with a brass ensemble I very likely would have just recorded it by myself with an acoustic guitar in the old blues tradition but alas the die was cast and a brass EP was born instead.
I wrote this song a few months ago around the release of our first EP whilst I was on my way home late at night after having watched a concert by the great Mud Morgenthau, son of Muddy Waters, at The Forge in Camden. Every time I walk home with a heavy head as the night slowly turns into morning after a show or a long night out at a pub I'm watched at a distance by foxes young and old, big and small, curious and aloof and I thought to myself:
"Every damned blues singer has sung about how they're a rolling stone or caught on a lost highway but no one has ever noticed that there isn't a creature on this Earth more suited to the lifestyle of the blues than the tiniest of fox who from the day he was born has had to live off scraps and be happy about it."
So I decided I had found something with just a touch of originality which I think is just enough and as much as I love living in a home with a stable existence - it's not hard to romanticise a life on the road with no end to the horizon, no sky too high to yelp at, and no pit too deep to climb in.
Enjoy.

Fox Crossing The Road
In the dark of the night
When you're on your way home
You've gone had too many
It's cold but you're feeling warm
Well I'm a skulking around
My sisters and I
Are a prowling honey
But don't you pay no mind
Cos I'm a fox just a crossing the road
Yeah I'm a fox now honey just a crossing the road
If you see me around now
Creeping around
Ain't got a house nor a home now darling
I'm a rambler at heart
Cos I'm a fox just a crossing the road
Woo I'm a fox now just a crossing the road
Well I've a travelled through the night
All around these lands
And I've never settled nowhere
And I've got no one
And nowhere to live in the whole wide world
But no rent means that I don't care
Cos I'm a fox just a crossing the road
Yeah I'm a fox just a crossing the road
